Rich : Fabuleusement bien.

Johnny : Je m’appelle Johnny.

Rich : C’était super, je me suis bien amusé.

Johnny : Seasick Steve.

Johnny : Hello, my name is human.

Votre second album The Boy Who Died Wolf est sorti il y a quelques mois.

Ensuite, on a sorti quelques chansons.

Johnny : Le terminer.

«My Name Is Human» est donc le premier single.

Ryan : On aime juste l’argent !

Highly Suspect : Avec plaisir !

Johnny : Highly Suspect log, 3018, we’re starting this day off with Flo. We’re here in Arras, France at Main Square Festival and we’re about to do an interview. What have you got for me ?

How are you today ?

Rich : Fabulous !

Johnny : My name is Johnny.

Ryan : Hey, I’m Ryan and I’m fantastic.

Roadies and management : We’re fine !

What did you think of the show today ?

Rich : It was great I had a lot of fun.

Johnny : Seasick Steve.

Ryan : Yeah that was cool.

Can you introduce yourself for people who might not know who you are ?

Rich : Hi, my name is Rich.

Johnny : Hello, my name is human.

Ryan : I’m Ryan and we are Highly Suspect 2012

How did you start the band ?

Johnny : Well, basically we have met at the county fair. I was throwing balloons and I saw Rich. He had a girl with him and he couldn’t get the balloons at the right place so I did a demo and gifted the girl. Then Rich fucked me and beat my ass out. The girl felt really bad so I hanged out with her for a while, that’s how I met Rich. I met Ryan on a boat.

Ryan : It was more like a yatch.

Johnny : Yeah it’s true, with champagne.

Your second album was release month ago. Are you happy with the reception ?

Johnny : Yeah.

Rich : Yep !

Ryan : Yup.

Johnny : I couldn’t be happier. It’s so much better than the reception that I'm getting with my fucking cell phone, it's terrible !

Can you tell us more about the recording process of the album ?

Johnny : Yes, we went to Bogota, Colombia after we had hang out in Los Angeles for a week. Then we put down some material, we were away from all our friends so we weren’t distracted. It was a really different way for us to make an album. It was great and fun but we are excited to make another album in a even different way, which is quite the opposite because it will include influences from everybody.

What’s your favorite part about composing music ?

Johnny : Finishing it.

Rich : We like to have fun when we’re making music because it reflects on the way that the final product comes out. Everyone is different, whatever you got to do, you got to enjoy yourself in the process.

Ryan : We also like to do drugs. (everyone laughs) I think it’s amazing when everyone is in the studio, or wherever we are, when we have an idea and we think it’s great we got excited about it. We come to different country and play songs in front of different people and they seem as excited as we were in the studio.

«My Name Is Human» is the first single from the album. Why did you choose this song especially ?

Johnny : Basically, to make as much money as we possibly could and promote the album in the US ! (laughs) If it was up to me it would have been «Wolf» but it’s too long.

Ryan : We just like money !

Rich : We prefer drugs ! In our next video we will be throwing money.

Every song on the album has its own vibe but which one are you the most proud of ?

Johnny : For me it’s «Viper Strike» because the song starts off with a total riff. This riff was a joke but we love it ! I get messages every single day from minorities that thanks me for being a single straight white guy and sticking up in our country.

How would you describe your music ?

Johnny : Sex. No that’s a terrible answer. Yeah sex, drugs and rock and roll ! Our music is not for me to describe.

Your artworks are always well designed. Where do you find all these ideas, your inspirations ?

Johnny : Thank you. Basically any album that’s ever stuck on my mind has had an incredible cover. We found an artist called Eugenia Loli on Instagram because you know, it’s the future already ! She liked our music so we worked with her for our 2 albums. And Rich makes most of our merch art, like pretty much all of it, he designs it.

Which message would you like to spread with your music ?

Johnny : Love and good vibes ! We are not a political band but we’re a band for the people. I think the biggest message that we can spread is to have so innocence, it’s kind of like, don’t be afraid to put your stuff down here.

What’s your main influences musically speaking ?

Johnny : Seasick Steve.

Rich : I really enjoy listening to Bach and Beethoven.

Ryan : I like country music and western. I like pop and rock. I think anything can be an influence, a good game or ping-pong can be an influence.

Johnny : You know what’s great ? Music that you can fuck to. I spent my entire high school fucking to Radiohead and today we got to open the stage for them. That’s great, they are a huge influence for our band.

If you had to write a concept album…

Johnny : I think we have written 2 concept albums and the subject is about inner struggle, on both of them. Or else I would write about… I don’t know, what would you write about ?

Rich : That’s a good question.

Ryan : Really good question. Sticking up for the underdogs. Or about the life of a common person. Most people are common.

Johnny : I have a concept : A little girl is 6 years old. She lives in a log cabin. Out in the middle of the woods with her parents. She wants to run away because she is completely trapped. She wants to explore, she knows there’s so much out there. So she runs through the woods and finds a river then jumps in the river. She does’t know where it’s gonna take her but she knows it’s gonna take her somewhere. That would be the start of my concept.

Rich : That’s a song about you as a girl ! (laughs)

Would you be interested in writing a song for a movie ?

Johnny : You know what’s funny about that ? And you are going to hear this first. I just scored a little bit of Super Troopers 2, with Eagles Of Death Metal in Los Angeles. It’s just a tiny clip and I didn’t know my piece would ever make it in there but I just did that. I was sat and watched the film then Jesse called me and asked me «Hey, what do you think about the scene ?» and I was totally in the mood for it. I think they loved my piece and it was a funny experience. I will absolutely do that again in the future.

Are you going to watch some bands today ?

Johnny : Yeah, Seasick Steve and Radiohead. I think La Femme are really great too, I’m excited to check them out.

Roadies : No, you serious ?

Johnny : Of course.

Anything to add ?

Johnny : I’m a fan of Seasick Steve, please watch him. And Matt (management) hates Linkin Park, he wanted to fight Chester Bennington. Kidding, he just have really huge biceps. (Note of the author : The interview took place on July 2nd)

Thank you for your time !

Highly Suspect : You’re welcome !

Interview : Florentine Pautet
